Overview
The Chernobyl Nuclear facility is located near Kiev, Ukraine. It housed four RBMK-1000 generators able to produce 1,000 megawatts of electric power, and the four together produced about 10% of Ukraine's electricity at the time of the accident. As the rush for nuclear power went on, the Soviet Union entered a cold war. Because of this race for nuclear supremacy, there was a lack of safety and precaution towards nuclear energy. Chernobyl's first two generators were considered 1st generation. The next two were considered 2nd. And the last two that were never eventually made, were 3rd generation generators.
Fortunately, the reactor that exploded was not a 1st generation generator. For if that were the case, the amount of destruction, radiation, and deaths would have been much higher.
